I was sleeping but then, as my brain would have it, a thought woke me up. The kind that’s going to save the world! I rolled the dice that I would actually still remember it when I woke up in the morning. Although some might argue the point, my brain already has too much say in my life! I opted for delayed creative gratification, and went back to sleep.
So, here it is now. What if what’s wrong with the world – disease, hostility, overeating, lust, power plays – comes down to a lack of love, self-love? What if we’re just not able to flip on that internal switch that says “love yourself anyway”? Love yourself no matter what you say or do wrong. Love yourself no matter how unattractive you are or others judge you to be, or how ugly people can act toward you when they feel entitled to do so, or how many times you get stuck to the bottom of the world’s shoe as you’re minding your own business or trying to help the world be a better place.
What if it all comes down to not enough self-love in the world? Not the narcissistic kind that creates Ponzi schemes or ways to use others for your own purposes – like war, plagues, pollution, and profit. Self-love within the context of love for humanity, not against it.
How would the world look if societal approval were based once again on internal qualities? What if the popular trend became that you couldn’t be featured on the news or a website without being a person who won acclaim through contribution rather than cuteness or accumulated cash? What if every time someone was featured in an article or news story, there also appeared a disclaimer and a review rating (a la Consumer Reports) based on the person’s character in real life? Just so we could keep a reality check on which heroes deserved embracing. Not everyone in the public eye has to be a hero, but everyone with a public eye should have a clue about who they revere and embrace. Otherwise, humanity can become derailed – like it is now.
That’s how wars happen. That’s how victims happen. Someone the world reveres or pays homage to decides on who’s cool and who isn’t. All of a sudden, there’s an entitled group wreaking social havoc on another less favored group or groups. It doesn’t matter what the terms of discrimination are. We are all one people, one planet, one pledge of allegiance to the Universe that God created for us.
So, if that’s God’s pledge to us, what’s our problem in flipping our internal switch to love – self-love – forever and ever, Amen?
Why should any of God’s creations have to stand down for any of God’s other creations? If that’s what’s being insisted on anywhere on this planet, it’s time to collectively flip our switches to “self-love” and let the senses of entitlements fall where they may.
God didn’t make us to be each other’s victims, He made us to be each other’s heroes. Why not honor that goal by learning how to validate ourselves from within? All we need to do is honor our worth as equal to anyone else’s and stand for the rights of all to be valued equally.
So, go on. Flip your switch already! It’s only self-love.
