Want things to be different? Start with yourself. I’m working on this now. I want how I connect with information – whether by processing it, wearing it, acting on it, using it, discarding it or burying it – to be different. Same thing goes for circumstances.
I want to be on my own page in a proactive, ‘atta girl’ kind of way. Knocking it out of the park no matter what factoids, realities, obstacles or attitudes cross my path. I want to be my own change. I want everyone else to do the same, to care enough and believe enough to be the change for themselves.
You got oppression going on? Stand up to it! In your own space, in a proactive non-violent way. Violence and hate against others takes away from your cause and makes your point moot because now you’re either just a throwaway life behind bars, headed that direction or your homies and/or society are wishing you were there already. You have forfeited both your right to matter, and your power to effect change in a positive way.
You got religion and a Christian belief. Great! Walk it, don’t talk it. That means being humble and generous in spirit, understanding that homelessness, joblessness and Godlessness are all related. You get to decide which side of God you’re standing on – the supply side or the dark side. Judge not or you could be next on the “short supply” side of God’s economics.
You have power over others and their existence? Make sure it’s your mission to serve them and not just exploit their dependence on your authority. Let their trust in you not be in vain. Let yourself not be vain or in vain because of their trust. With power comes responsibility to lead others to their highest good and purpose. To do otherwise is to dishonor them, yourself and God’s creation which exists for all who inhabit it. You are not God nor have any other substitutes proven sufficient in the vast scheme of things. If you doubt it, look around you and see what we have wrought by focusing our attention on dollar signs and those who do not value or adhere to God’s omnipotence and principles, or at the least the value and meaning of each other.
You feeling a need for all of it to change? It starts with you. With each of us. Believing we each have the power within us to change and to hold others accountable for ignoring change when and where it’s needed. Whether it’s personal, societal, political, economical or structural, when our infrastructure is crumbling, it’s time to own what is and be the change that makes it all whole again.
It starts with me, it starts with you. It’s time to be the change together.
